Regarding fisheries, in Lopez Mateos we have all kinds of species. The black sea bass around the root system of mangroves, which fringe the greater part of the coastal waters. The water of the bay contain lots of halibut and grouper grated while outside is rich in yellowtail, mackerel and grouper. And once out of the bay there are huge schools of yellowfin tuna, dorado, striped marlin, mackerel and wahoo.

In the area there are only two types of billfish, striped marlin and swordfish. Both are prized in fishing contests because of their fighting ability and even striped marlin often offers spectacular stunts. These are considered off-shore species therefore requires boats with ability to search for for many miles around the local waters to find them feeding. More and more fishers release these spices after catch to ensure its population in future years, usually only retain these species when the fish died after being trapped.

Species like dorado, tuna and mackerel are considered species of both inshore and offshore. They are characterized by their strength and appropriate sized bodies that provides them the ability to move quickly through the water. They are predators, they tend to migrate large areas and are rewarded in fishing contests.

Calico, barracuda, bonito, rockfish, sea bass. They are considered inshore species and usually only targeted when offshore fishing is unsuccessful. However represent a major challenge due to problems such as rocks and coral, plus they have a high nutritional value and is fished mainly to eat.
